Beyond the Lights (2014): Beyond the Lights is a 2014 American love drama film directed and written by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver, Machine Gun Kelly, and Danny Glover.
The film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2014, and was released on theaters in the United States on November 14, 2014. In 2015, the song “Grateful” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
In 1998 in London, young Noni Jean was taken by her mother Macy to a salon to fix her hair before her career in a talent show. Noni is happy to win second place for playing Nina Simone’s song “Blackbird”, but her mother refuses to accept anything other than the first place and forces Noni to smash her cup down.
Currently, Noni Jean is a new artist who has just won the Billboard Music Award for her collaboration with her boyfriend Kid Culprit and has been honored as a star. However, the pressures of success make him almost dead from falling off the hotel balcony. Surviving is a young police officer, Kaz Nicol. Noni’s team, including her mother, told reporters at a press conference that she had fallen by accident.
Kaz, who has political ambitions, does not like being forced to lie to the media, she is initially cold to Noni. However, he later apologizes to her. Gradually, they are reunited with their loved one, despite the mother’s disapproval. Noni tells Kaz about her secret songs, and she supports her creative desires. Noni decides to end the romantic relationship with Kid Culprit sponsored by her group.
Despite her band’s attempts to cover it up, rumors still circulate that Noni has attempted suicide, with her company telling Macy (who is also Noni’s manager) that her recording contract is based on future success. However, during the play, Kid Culprit just humiliated him and lied about their relationship, and Kaz hit him on stage defending Noni. After this, Noni loses her recording contract and is emotionally distressed, so Kaz goes with her on a trip to Mexico far away where they enjoy being together.
Noni discards her old haircut to harvest her natural hair, and a trip to a karaoke pub leads Noni to deliver an emotional play called “Blackbird.” The game was downloaded online and spread, which made Noni’s mother and paparazzi find her. Macy tells Noni that the success of the virus in her career has made her recording company think again, and Noni agrees to return home. Kaz tells Noni that she is not sure if anything will ever be different, and their relationship has been suspended.
Noni wants to add a song she wrote to her upcoming album, but Macy refuses. The two are arguing about their relationship and Noni tells her mother that even after the suicide attempt, Macy continued to focus on her work and damaged her happiness and mental health. Noni fires Macy as her boss. Meanwhile, Kaz has embarked on a political campaign and suggests that her career should come before her happiness.
Encouraged by Kaz’s honesty, Noni did a television interview in which she admitted that she had tried to commit suicide and that she was getting help. Noni prepares to play live for the first time in London, and just before entering the stage she suddenly meets Kaz, who flew there and expressed her love for him. Noni composed a song for her enthusiastic audience. He brings Kaz to the stage, tells her he loves her, and they hug.
