[Movie] Burning Coles
So what’s my take on Burning Coles? You can be assured of a quality production that is sure to bless individuals and families. The first thing that struck me was that the novel’s story, written by Emmanuela Mike-Bamiloye, was rewritten as a screenplay by not one but two talented screenwriters.
The mere thought of theater ministers like Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Goodness Adegbola writing the screenplay for this film makes a gospel film reviewer like me lick my lips at the prospect of such a collaborative effort.
I discussed the benefits of more specialization and collaborations in my mid-year review of 2022 gospel films; So it is an absolute delight to witness this unique partnership in the production of gospel films. Without giving away details, a main result of this is that there are several twists and turns that make for a more interesting watch.

There’s something this film does to its characters – it reveals and connects them in ways that serve as callbacks that make films more immersive. There’s a character reveal in Burning Coles for a cameo that I think gospel filmmakers could learn from.
It was a casting choice and a camera angle that drew loud applause from the audience at the premiere. These are subtle elements that add a little extra lift to a production. Likewise, those of you who are familiar with Free Gift International movies will be pleased to see a certain well-known actress here.
The young actors in the film also made every effort to make the film compelling. As usual, the scores were on point, and I identified at least two unique background tunes, one of which came in full as a beautiful end-credits soundtrack by Jay-Mikee.
