Early Life

McReynolds was born Jonathan Caleb McReynolds on September 17, 1989 in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised by a single mother with love and support from his family, church members and his pastor at the New Original Church of God in Christ.

Known as a very precocious child, he learned to play the drums by the age of five, the piano by the age of eight, and demonstrated his talent weekly as a church musician. He was a reluctant singer, to say the least. In high school, however, he began breaking out of his shell; After all, instead of singing alone in his living room, he shares his talents with the public.

He attended Whitney Young Magnet High School, where he not only became known for his musical talent, but also learned how to record and produce music as a member of the school’s podcast initiative. Those skills would prove significant in college, when he recorded his first songs, including his first viral hit “No Grey,” in his dorm room.

Music Career

His music career began in 2012 with the release of Life Music on September 25, 2012 through Light Records and Entertainment One Music.

This was his breakthrough release, charting on the Billboard charts, and it peaked at #98 on the Billboard 200 along with #3 Gospel Albums and #23 on the Independent Albums chart. His song “No Gray” was a viral hit, earning him TV appearances on BET’s Celebration of Gospel and fans in India, Arie and Nicki Minaj.

McReynold’s sophomore album, Life Music: Stage Two, was a Grammy Award-nominated, four-week Billboard Gospel No. 1 album and a GMA Dove Award winner. It featured Israel Houghton, India, Arie and Chantae Cann and his first top five gospel hit “Gotta Have You”.

Rating the album five stars for the Journal of Gospel Music, Bob Marovich says, “Life Music, Stage Two is the musical manifestation of his honest and spiritually grounded approach to dealing with the vicissitudes of everyday life.” McReynolds brought on another album The popular R&B talent tweeted about his EP Sessions (2016) This unannounced surprise release hit #1 on the iTunes Christian chart in one night.

Jonathan’s third album Make Room was Jonathan’s biggest hit to date, earning him eight Stellar Awards and two Grammy nominations. It also debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Gospel chart. Make Room announced its first #1 radio hit “Not Lucky, I’m Loved” and the massive viral hit “Cycles.” This album received public support from stars of different cultures and genres like Justin Bieber, Kandi Burruss and millions of listeners around the world.

This project provided strong evidence for Kirk Franklin’s claim that Jonathan was indeed “the future of gospel music”. In March 2018, he laid a major foundation for gospel when his hour-long TV special, Make Room, was aired multiple times on TVOne. He was also the first in his genre to form a major partnership with Tidal. As if all of that wasn’t enough, McReynolds’ fall 2018 book, Make Room: Finding Where Faith Fits, just missed the bestseller list.

In June 2019, Jonathan appears as a judge along with Kirk Franklin, Kelly Price and Erica Campbell on Season 9 of BET’s Sunday Best. In 2020 he released People, an EP with “Moving On”, the 2021 Grammy winner for Best Gospel Performance/Song.

In August 2021, McReynolds received his fourth consecutive #1 gospel airplay with “Grace.”

Personal life

In 2016, McReynolds founded Elihu Nation, his nonprofit organization dedicated to “celebrating, nurturing, and working to create young seekers and role models of wisdom.” It has organized several events aimed at Christian scholarship and self-help and has awarded college scholarships of at least $30,000.

Somehow, between touring, recording and TV appearances, Jonathan spent five years teaching in the music department at his alma mater, Columbia College Chicago. His social contribution outside of music is important to him. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in music from Columbia College, he earned a master’s degree in biblical studies from Moody Theological Seminary in 2015.

In 2018, McReynolds was inducted into Mensa, an international society for individuals with high IQs, and an honorary member of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc., an international Christian fraternity.
