Gospel Singer Lionel Peterson Passes Away at 74
Legendary South African gospel singer and preacher Lionel Peterson, 74, has reportedly passed away. The “Peace (Jehovah Knows)” singer reportedly passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022 after struggling with health issues for the past several years.
News of Lionel Peterson’s death broke via various social media posts with condolences for the family and tributes for the pastor. Many also shared personal stories of how the singer has impacted their lives.
A ‘Matthew John’ posted on Facebook; “Lionel Peterson not only made a massive impact in my life, he was an inspiration to the nations. Not only is he a man who has shown me incredible love and hugged me at every opportunity, he is my uncle. He was and always will be my family.’”
In response to the news, legendary gospel singer Ron Kenoly also took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message to the Lionel Peterson family.
“Sing for joy, O Africa…” One of your favorite sons has graduated to eternal glory!” He wrote,
“Sadness seems like an understatement when I think of the loss of my friend and brother in Christ Lionel Peterson. We first toured too many cities in South Africa together in the mid 90’s. After the success of his album Rejoice Africa, he traveled to countries in Africa and around the world.” Read in full here.

They wrote on Facebook; “It is with deepest sympathy that we mourn the death of Pastor Lionel Petersen from 8/13/47 to 7/14/22, who went home to be with the Lord. For most of his life he preached the gospel to a worldwide audience. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Valarie Petersen and his family as they process his loss. May you find peace and comfort.
