Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a 2022 American hero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Dr. Strange. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, followed by Dr. Strange (2016) and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The film is directed by Sam Raimi, written by Michael Waldron, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, and Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. In the film, Strange defends America Chavez (Gomez), a young man who can travel around the world, from Wanda Maximoff (Olsen).
Dr. Strange’s director and co-author Scott Derrickson had plans to follow suit in October 2016. He signed to return as director in December 2018, when Cumberbatch was confirmed to be returning. The title of the film was announced in July 2019 with Olsen’s involvement, and Jade Halley Bartlett was hired to write the film in October.
Derrickson stepped down as director in January 2020, citing a difference in composition, when Waldron and Raimi joined the following month and started over. Recording began in November 2020 in London but was stopped in January 2021 due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Production resumed in March 2021 and ended in mid-April in Somerset. The shooting also took place in Surrey and Los Angeles.
Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was first shown at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on May 2, 2022, and was released in the United States on May 6, as part of the MCU Phase Four. The film received some positive reviews from critics, who praised Raimi’s direction, visual effects, musical notes, and cast of characters (especially Cumberbatch, Olsen, and Gomez), although the slow march received some criticism.
