TOPIC: Salt Of The World (DCLM Daily Manna 11 August 2022)
TEXT: Genesis 40:1-8 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.
2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.
3 And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.
5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.
6 And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.
7 And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?
8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
KEY VERSE: “And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?” (Genesis 40:7).
MESSAGE
The real litmus test of the Christian is not his exploits within the confines of the church building or when he finds himself in the midst of other believers. Whether in the temple or outside, Christians are to render excellent service to the Lord at all times. God’s abiding commission is that His disciples are to be the salt and light of the world, and not just of the church.
Thrown into prison as a common criminal for refusing a woman’s proposal to be her sinful mate, Joseph preserved his integrity by preserving the light and salt within him. When he awoke one morning, he found two fellow prisoners without the joy and life that salt and light offer. They were filled with sadness and darkness. He comforted her with the grace of God within him.
Joseph was in the same desolate condition as the two men. He too could look sad. But he wasn’t. What was responsible for his cheerful appearance? His connection to God gave him the salt and light Jesus spoke of. The believer must be salt and light to a suffering and dark world by preaching the love of Christ and how he lives.
When we are the salt and light of the world, we don’t become part of the crowd bitterly complaining about the socio-economic and political conditions around us. We won’t let them drag us down to the point of carrying placards in the streets to castigate the government of the day. Instead, like Joseph, we reveal the joy of salvation within us and show them the power of God to work things out for their good.
